Welcome to the second edition of Phenom, the Magazine for Volleyball Players! In case you missed the inaugural issue, Phenom is a publication of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. With over 5,000 members nationwide, the AVCA is the largest organization of vol-leyball coaches in the country. As the nation’s leader in volleyball coaching education we aim to help educate you, the player, as well! Here is what we hope you will gain from reading this issue of Phenom: 1. Learn what it was like for both men’s and women’s athletes to compete in the NCAA National Championship and take front row as they reveal their thoughts on exciting experiences they have been fortunate enough to endure. 2. Better educate yourself about the recruiting process and steps you should be taking as an aspiring collegiate athlete. 3. Understand that even multiple-sport athletes at the high school level can go on to earn collegiate scholarships, even without playing much, if any club volleyball. 4. Learn more about keeping your body healthy, both mentally and physically. 5. Take notes from lessons learned by a current U.S. Women’s National Team member and former AVCA All-American and NCAA Champion. 6. All of this and much more! As you continue your volleyball playing career, you may decide that you want to enter the volleyball coaching profession. With a new Student Membership category, you can get a head start on your vocation while still in school, as the AVCA is the most reliable re-source for you as you build your coaching career. We hope you continue to enjoy and value Phenom, and wish you the best on your quest as student-athletes! phenom July 2010 • Volume 1, Issue 2 Published by IMG Associations PhenomStaff Editor – Leah Brock, leah.brock@avca.org Editorial Assistant – Will Engle, will.engle@avca.org Graphic Designers – Angstrom Graphics, angstromgraphics.com Contributing Writers – Kali Andress; Leah Brock; Christina Cahoon; Doug Ellis; Will Engle; Ryan Hite; Jeff Janssen, M.S.; Debbie Schmidt; Christopher Stankovich, Ph.D.; Courtney Thompson; Gary Williams, Ph.D. Contributing Photographers – Scott Bjornlie; Tim Cowie; Hawai’i Sports Information; Ryan Hite; Jeff Richards; Stanford Sports Information; Courtney Thompson; Washington Sports Information, Wisconsin-Oshkosh Sports Information Advertising Information: For information on advertising in Phenom, as well as advertising or sponsorship information with AVCA, please contact Toby Bishop at toby.bishop@avca.org or Courtney Hacker at courtney.hacker@avca.org.
